Kidsew Patterns: Advanced Sewing With Paper Patterns
Class experience
Intermediate Level
Welcome to KidSew! Have you ever bought a pattern from the store and then had difficulty putting all the pieces together? Maybe you found that some of the instructions left you feeling more confused about sewing, even though you've seen before. If that's been the case for you, or if you'd like to learn how to use these types of patterns, this class will be a great benefit to you! If you have already completed my other KidSew flex courses, you are ready for the next step: reading a paper...
Students will learn how to read a sewing pattern and create two garments.
I have been teaching KidSew flex courses on Outschool since 2018, teaching young learners how to sew basic beginner projects independently. I have also worked as a professional seamstress and ran my own sewing and textile art business for many years on Etsy and my own website. In addition to sewing garments for everyday use, I am also a cosplayer and have sewn many costumes for myself and my dance & theater students.
Should be familiar with basic terms and techniques such as: right and wrong sides, direction of stretch and bias, hemming, sew an elastic casing, sew in a basic zipper, hand-sewing (blind stitch and ladder stitch), and gathering.
- Two physical (paper) sewing patterns that will need to be mailed or picked up: Simplicity 8263 - Women's Cape or Capelet Pattern (S - XL) McCall's M8195 - Misses' Dress OR choose a dress pattern of your choice in any size. - Sewing machine and sewing notions (scissors, hand needles, thread, etc) - Supplies listed on the paper pattern (check back panel and watch week 1 video) - chalk or washable pen/marker
Learners who choose to sew along will be using scissors and possibly rotary cutters depending on preference. Also keep in mind that sewing can be a time-consuming and at times frustrating process. They require attention to detail and patience. Plan to be on hand to assist learners with these advanced projects.
