Class Experience

Intermediate Level
Welcome to KidSew!

Have you ever bought a pattern from the store and then had difficulty putting all the pieces together? Maybe you found that some of the instructions left you feeling more confused about sewing, even though you've seen before. If that's been the case for you, or if you'd like to learn how to use these types of patterns, this class will be a great benefit to you!

If you have already completed my other KidSew flex courses, you are ready for the next step: reading a paper sewing pattern. Learners who haven't taken my KidSew course for beginners and intermediate sewists are still welcome to join, especially if you are already familiar with your machine and can measure, cut and sew independently. You should be familiar with basic terms and techniques such as: right and wrong sides, direction of stretch and bias, how to hem, sew an elastic casing, sew in a basic zipper, hand-sewing (blind stitch and ladder stitch), and gathering.

I will be demonstrating my class with two specific patterns, which can be purchased in-store or online:

Weeks 1 & 2: Simplicity 8263 - Women's Cape and Caplet Sewing Pattern (XS - XL). For the first week we will go over sewing terminology, supplies and basic dressmaking for the advanced beginner. There will be a video lecture as well as a printable worksheet with vocabulary, an online quiz game, and a review of the pattern chosen for this project and collecting supplies. Week 2 will be spent sewing the actual cape step-by-step.

Weeks 3 & 4: Choose your own pattern and follow along with me as I make McCall's M8195 - Misses' Dress. You can purchase the same pattern if you like, or buy your own pattern. The lesson will be spent going over their pattern choice and preferences, collecting supplies and watching my video tutorials on how to prepare your pattern pieces for sewing.

Since this is a flex class, there are no scheduled live meetings; however, I am available to answer your questions any time during the 4 weeks of class. I will also be posting tips and ideas, suggestions and encouragement in the classroom throughout the course. This is the biggest difference between my course and any other sewing course you might find online.

It is my goal for each student to complete my sewing courses with the skills to sew and design independently. I welcome all students and can't wait to see your projects!

**By enrolling in this class, you are accessing patterns and video tutorials that you can download and keep to use for as long as you need, even after the course ends. Please refrain from sharing or redistributing these copyrighted materials and videos with anyone outside of our classroom. Thank you!
