This class is targeted for middle school to early high school students who are preparing for SAT's or PSAT's or PSAT 8/9 or PSAT 10. It's for students who want to focus on the topics for the early PSAT tests with skills up through Algebra 1 level. Two brief, high-energy weekly class filled with specific instruction on each kind of SAT question (including PSAT). One concept per week - 2 meetings focused on explaining the concept thoroughly. This works well paired with the Kickin' It Rapid...
After several cycles of these five weekly topics, your learner will be able to say, "I can more easily and quickly solve the easier PSAT / SAT math problems that involve the following topics: Word Problems with Pre-Algebra Level Math, Word Problems with Early Algebra 1 Level Math, Means, Medians, and Modes plus Ratios and Proportions, Linear Systems of Equations and Parabolas. Students will be more prepared for the easier math problems on the PSAT/SAT, and thereby preparing them for the more advance PSAT/SAT prep which is covered in the Kick It course (non-junior edition). Your student will come out of this game far more quick-on-their-feet for the math SAT.
I've been certified in the public schools for teaching math in middle and high schools. I received additional certified training for gifted and talented learners. I taught math for sixteen years and I've been a personal SAT tutor for seven years. My students have typically raised their scores between 100 and 300 points. As a chemical engineer and project management professional in the world of business consulting and information technology consulting, I've completed over five levels of college calculus and applied mathematics and used these math and computing skills throughout my career. The students I have taught had varying learning abilities that ranged from one with pronounced learning disabilities to gifted and talented. When it came to PSAT's and SAT's, each of them with impressive improvements in their scores. It can be done! Just watch how your learner improves!
No homework will be assigned for this class.
Paper, pencil, and a brain ready for thinking fun - A TI-84 or higher level calculator is also needed.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The learner progress is assessed by how well the learner participates in the interactions during class.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students will have far more fun if they have studied linear equations and are comfortable with the terminology and concepts. This class is not an introductory or concept teaching class. Its sole purpose is to build speed and students are expected to be familiar enough to participate.
No outside sources are needed.
