Class Experience

Learn to Play Piano! Students will start at the very beginning and learn notation, finger placement and position and proper technique. Each class will allow the students to learn the fundamentals and basics as a group, while progressing technically at their own speed. The first week will focus on the very beginnings of melodic and rhythmic notation. We will also address the setup of a keyboard and how to find finger placement on it. We will address how both hands are used and where to put them for our first positions. We will number our fingers and practice using and moving each finger based on that number on the black keys. The second week will incorporate more specifics regarding how they can use the notation in the book to move forward in a fundamentally correct way. Finger numbers will continue and will add all fingers separately and together. Students will move to the white keys with numbers.
Depending on the students in the class, finger numbers will turn into note names either this week or the following. Each week following we will add more notation and advanced concepts for both hands. Those weeks will add concepts such as different hand and finger positions, more complicated rhythms, more notation, using both hands separately and then together and different genres of music. The pacing of the class will be determined by the students enrolled so that no student is left behind. However the book is created so that more advanced students may move ahead with my guidance. The songs will be age appropriate and fun so that every class each student will leave feeling like they learned and made music. Students will play together and on their own. There will be call and response, games to learn the notation and there will always be the opportunity to ask questions and receive assistance. I will have some games, PDFs and PowerPoints on the screen for them to refer to and use and they will also be learning out of their own book. I will be playing with them so that they have a model at all times. There is no musical experience needed for this class. Younger learners must be able to identify right and left hands and be able to read individual letters on their own. Students must be able to have a camera positioned so that I can see their hands, face and keyboards. Students will need to be able to mute and unmute themselves at all times. Siblings taking the class together can be on the same keyboard if it is more than 3 octaves.
