Kevin Henkes has an amazing collection of stories focused on different mouse characters. In this lesson I will read aloud the story "Lilly's Big Day" by Kevin Henkes. "Lilly rises to the occasion as only Lilly can, turning heartbreak into wedding cake (a delicious three-tiered frosted Swiss cheese, no less), and disappointment into friendship." Every child (and even adults) has experienced disappointment. We will discuss Lilly's feelings and how they change throughout the book. We also will discuss how Lilly reacts to her feelings (good and the bad) and come up with better ways to express her feelings. Together we will think about Lilly's 'problem' and how it was solved. Lilly has a huge personality! We will explore her character traits and discuss how they can be good and bad for Lilly. We will use a worksheet to get our thoughts organized down on paper. Most of the characters in Kevin Henkes' stories are based on a different mouse character. Your learner will have an opportunity to get creative by coming up with their own Kevin Henkes' character. They will get to name, draw and describe their character's personality traits. Learners will have a worksheet that can be completed at the end of class or after class (timing depends on how many learners and how the discussions go). The sheet will correlate to what they previously (orally) shared and help the learner get their thoughts down on paper.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Students will engage in a fantastic read aloud collection by Kevin Henkes. The text is very relatable to young readers. We will touch on many different story elements, but dig deeper into character traits. When a young reader is able to connect to the story they are more likely to be able to comprehend and retell the story.
I will also try to help your learner think about their feelings and the best way to appropriately deal with their feelings by relating it to the book.
I love all Kevin Henkes' books and think they are perfect for young readers! I was a full-time kindergarten teacher and used many of his texts in my everyday lessons. I will try to form a connection with each learner.
