US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner Level
In this class, students will be introduced to cryptography and how it is used in computers and the internet today. We will explore the history of cryptography, including basic ciphers such as the pigpen and Caesar ciphers. We will discuss symmetric and asymmetric encryption, how they differ, and how they are used. We will see a quick demo on hashing and discuss how hashing is similar, but not the same as encryption, yet how it is used in cryptography. We will discuss what digital signatures are and how they are derived. Then we will put it all together in an overview of encrypted web sessions (or how your bank keeps your login secure). This is an interactive and informal class with a few jokes, fun photos, and lots of discussion. Students will be encouraged to participate in the discussion, and think outside the box!
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to basic cryptography concepts and be able to discuss how ciphers work at a general level.
Students will be taught how cryptography keeps data secure on almost all websites on the internet today.
