Class Experience

If you are looking for a fun and engaging way to review middle-level math concepts and you think you have what it takes to problem solve your way out of a virtual escape room - this is the class for you!

This 'level 2' class will be most comfortable for students in grades 5/6 or for students who have covered grade 5/6 material. If you are looking for a simliar class that is a bit easier, (4th/5th grade level) please look for KEEP CALM & MATH: Escape the Sahara Level 1 Upper Elementary Escape Room Adventure!"

This class will be based on the Escape Room attractions that can be found across the world. Similar to the Escape Room attractions, students will be “locked-in” during this game, and the object is to find the codes to “escape” within a given time period.

In order to be successful, teams will need to use good communication, logic, attention to detail, and cooperation.

This particular Escape Room focuses on middle-level math knowledge and logic. If your child has covered typical sixth-grade material or is the type of kid who thrives through fast-paced, cooperative challenges, they will do fine!

As a long time math teacher, I know how important it is to actually APPLY mathematical concepts in order to achieve maximum retention and that is the driving objective of these escape rooms. Kids don't have to know it all, they just have to show up ready to have fun, learn from others and share what they know!

Teams will have the support of the teacher at all times as I bounce back and forth between each team.
Learning Goals
Students will work cooperatively to:
- Review & improve their comprehension of basic mid-level math skills & concepts (whole number & decimal operations, prime numbers, factors, multiples, data analysis, beginning algebra, geometry, and more)
- Utilize mathematical vocabulary in a real-world context
- Employ and communicate problem-solving strategies in a small group
- Engage positively with their peers in a fun, engaging competition
- Work & communicate cooperatively toward a common academic goal

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This particular class invokes a zombie theme. There will representations and mention of zombies, but care will be taken toward sensitivity in images.
Supply List
I will provide an online virtual escape room environment.

Learners should bring paper & a pencil to the class. They will need a place to do calculations and keep track of codes.

Please, also, it is best if students have a headset or headphones with a microphone (many phone earbuds have this!). This cuts down on background noise and makes it A LOT easier to hear each other speaking :) If no headphones, plan to have the student in a room with a door that can close.

Calculators will not be used for this particular escape room, because we will be focusing on mathematical operations. As I always explain to my students, calculators are absolutely appropriate for performing mathematical operations when doing so is not the focus of the learning objective. For example, if we are learning how to calculate the area of a parallelogram, we use a calculator because our focus is on calculating perimeter, not multiplication :)

I will also be looking for team captains who are joining from desktop or laptop computers (not iPads or Chromebooks). Team captains must be joining from these devices to give me full annotation capabilities and to make the breakout room feature accessible to all.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching late elementary/middle school math for 20 years. I have a passion for helping kids retain or regain their mathematical confidence. A strong number sense is best built in a safe environment that is fun and engaging. The foundational skills taught in 4th - 8th grades ARE the math skills people need to use in their everyday life and I am committed to helping kids recognize their capability and build on their curiosity to become STRONG MATH LEADERS :)
