Class Experience

Beginner Level
Are you a dinosaur EXPERT? Then this club is for you! Come test your dinosaur knowledge and meet other kids who love cretaceous creatures just as much as you do. We'll play games, move our bodies (just to get a little silly--always optional!), share our favorite dinosaur toys, books, and facts, and have fun practicing showing off our dinosaur expertise.

This class is meant for dino lovers at every level. I will be sure to provide opportunities for every student to participate and feel accomplished and included. The competitive element of the games will be light-hearted and is designed to be a positive experience for all participants. No actual prizes will be given--just bragging rights and the awesome feeling that you know a lot about something you love.

Each class will follow the same basic format, although the exact content will vary from week to week. Here is the basic schedule:
Welcome and warm up (usually a dino or nature-themed movement activity) (5 minutes)
Show-and-tell (typically 2 minutes per child)
A dino-themed game or other challenge (10-15 minutes)
(on occasion) Presentation time if applicable (if it is a building or sculpting challenge, for example) (optional--1 minute per child)
Wrap-up and goodbye

Our Spring/Summer 2022 schedule will be as follows:
Week of 4/24: Dinosaur BINGO + movement activity
Week of 5/1: Dinosaur Challenge (factile game) (no class on Friday, 5/6)
Week of 5/8: Dinosaur Egg Game
Week of 5/15: I Have, Who Has DINO Edition (bring your dinosaur toys--as many as you can find!)
Week of 5/22: Dinosaur Detective Scavenger Hunt + ID game (time permitting)
Week of 5/29: Volcano BOOM Wheel Game and Trivia (time permitting)
Week of 6/5: NO CLASS
Week of 6/12: Dinosaur Challenge (factile game)
Week of 6/19: Dino Masters: Build It/ Draw It/ Sculpt It (mini creative challenges)

Future Themes TBD but will always be of a similar nature to those posted above, and will be decided or adjusted according to the weekly mix of students and personalities, as well as student and teacher preference.
Learning Goals

Learning Needs
Shiny Happy Kids is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, affirming space for all kinds of learners. Growing up as ND and gifted kids, our ND teachers understand the need for classrooms where everyone gets to shine!
Parental Guidance
We will discuss relevant topics such as carnivores as meat-eaters, extinction, volcanos that are part of the natural world but may be upsetting to some sensitive learners. Please be assured that all content will be presented in a sensitive, age-appropriate manner. Regarding supplies/activities: Movement activities are basic in nature (animal moves, etc) but please be sure to provide adult supervision if you feel it is necessary. Participation in movement activities is no required. Please contact the teacher with any concerns. All challenges will be age-appropriate in their nature and execution. Allergy Note: Playdough may contain wheat, which could cause an allergic reaction if ingested in those sensitive to wheat gluten or with Celiac disease. I am happy to provide a recipe for gluten-free playdough upon request, or suggest alternative supplies.
Pre-Requisites
Basic dinosaur knowledge is encouraged, but we welcome everyone to come and learn with us through play!

Shiny Happy Kids teachers have been working with students ages 3-18 in a variety of settings, from art schools and STEAM labs to libraries, summer camps, forest school, and even RPG game tables. One thing we all have in common is a dedication to creating safe, positive, inclusive spaces and experiences where kids can connect, experiment, be challenged, share their passions, and just be their wonderful selves. We want you to SHINE!

From Miss Alex: I'm so excited to share my love of all things DINOSAUR with you! I've been teaching STEAM and art classes through fun, engaging topics like these to preschool through middle school for 8 years through an independent STEAM education company, as well as at a local arts facility. I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be learning about dinosaurs (yay!)--but we'll sneak in some observation, comparing and contrasting, art and building skills and more--all things that young paleontologists love to learn and practice!
