Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
In this five-day class, we will explore the lives of famous scientists and each person’s amazing discoveries.
A presentation will be given via PowerPoint presentation based on the featured scientist or inventor of that day.
Questions will be encouraged during my lecture.
The scientific concepts associated with the given scientist/inventor will be presented and discussed. Also, included in the discussion will be a biographical sketch, major scientific accomplishments, and fun facts where possible. We will begin this class series by introductions of myself and class participants (if the learner chooses). This introductory time will help us all get to know each other and feel more comfortable during the class to participate and ask questions.

On day one, we examine the phenomenal life and scientific discoveries of Marie Curie. We will discover the obstacles that she faced, the awards that she received, and her hard-working values. I will include an introduction to the periodic table in this lesson in part because Marie Curie discovered two elements on the periodic table. She and her husband coined the term “radioactivity.” There will be plenty of time for discussion about the periodic table and the nature of radioactivity.
On day one, we will also study Florence Nightingale. There’s is so much more to her story that most people know. She was a pioneer in the field of nursing, an angel of the battlefield, and a statistician.

One day two, we will examine the triumphant life of George Washington Carver. We will discover his humble beginnings, his aptitude for knowledge, his success as a student, and his fantastic contributions to the scientific world. During his life, he made friends with other famous people in his time and won the respect of many important people in his day.

On day three, we will also examine the unparalleled life of Benjamin Carson. Benjamin Carson was raised in a poor area with humble beginnings. He was triumphant in his life and career because of the example of his mother. He worked diligently to accomplish his goals and was successful at a major medical accomplishment in the 1980s.

On day four, we will examine the surprising life of scientist Katherine Johnson. She was relatively unknown until the end of her life. But, she made major contributions to NASA and the "Space Race". She broke barriers for both women and African-Americans. She has left a significant mark on today's mathematical and scientific world.
On day four, we will also study Nikolai Tesla and his famous rivalry with Thomas Edison.

On day five, we will study Galileo who is my all-time favorite scientist.

All of the above scientists will be discussed although the schedule may change due to varying levels of classroom communication and participation.

I’m a native of New Orleans. I am also a joyful homeschool mother of one and a passionate teacher of Biology, Chemistry, and Nutrition. I was formerly employed by Johnson & Johnson and GlaxoSmithkline. I tutor high school biology and I have experience with AP Biology and the Biology CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exam. I like catering to each child’s interests and responding to each question. I am also an ACE Educator.

I do have a loyal following of students and I would like to share the Outschool reviews that has been written about my classes.

Here are a few:

1)This was my daughter's third class with Mrs. Brandy and it certainly won't be her last. She learned a lot about chemistry, including high school terms, in an easy to understand way and had fun while doing so. She enjoyed the camaraderie with the other students, the hands on experiments and the Kahoot. Mrs. Brandy is knowledgeable about her subjects and shares her information in a fun and engaging manner. We highly recommend Mrs. Brandy's classes.-Chemisty for Middle School

2)Mrs. Brandy is fantastic. My daughter was excited to join the classes each week, and was excited to tell me things she learned in class. I will have her take other Mrs. Brandy classes. I am a university professor, and was able to overhear some of the classes, and was really impressed - Mrs. Brandy is a real, professional teacher - a lot of respect for her teaching method and curriculum. I admired her creativity of using candy to illustrate the spine. Thank you Mrs. Brandy! - Biology for Middle School

3)You know it's a good class when your kid comes out of it feeling like an area that they previously thought was too technical and tricky would actually be a possible career choice! Excellent teaching here in the truest sense of the word. -Histology/Microanatomy
