Jump aboard the Cinquain Train!

To introduce learners to the cinquain, I begin this class with its history and the woman who created this poetry form. During this visual presentation, I encourage learners to respond to the images they see and to share their own impressions with the group. After presenting the history of the cinquain, I demonstrate the line and part of speech requirements of the cinquain and share constructed cinquains as examples. As a group, we work together to identify the form, structure, and subjects of these examples as well as interpret the themes of these short but powerful pieces of poetry. Learners are invited to participate in the analysis of the cinquains and to ask questions about their defining features. Once we've studied the history and form of the cinquain and reviewed examples of this beautiful five-line poetic form, we'll get our creative juices flowing by writing cinquains of our own following the line and part of speech requirements. Our writing time will be in the form of a workshop with learners working both independently and in collaboration with fellow learners and me as needed. To close the class those learners who would like to are invited to share their creations with the group along with the subjects that inspired their writing.
