Journal Like a Worm and Other Grammar Lessons

In this nine-week class, students will begin each session by reading an entry from the picture book Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin. Guided discussion about the reading excerpt will provide an in-context opportunity to focus on a particular Grammar or Writing skill. The related mini-lesson will include interactive activities and for some topics, informal quizzes. The last 20 minutes of each session will be spent completing journal entries in response to a prompt based on the reading....
This class is taught in English.
Students will review focused Grammar and Writing skills and apply these skills to their journal writing in each class session. Highlighted skills: Date formats, Capitalization, Contractions, Compound Words, Comparative and Superlative Forms, Past Tense Verbs, Writing Numbers in Text, Quotations, Word Choice, End Punctuation, Synonyms, Onomatopoeia, Adverb Usage, Step by Step Directions, Spelling Rules: short vowels, double letter, Parallel Structure, Numbered Lists, Conjunctions
Carla Bratland earned her Masters in Elementary Education from Lesley University and has taught 4th and 5th Grade English Language Arts in many setting for over 15 years. Mrs. Bratland has also been a Professional Development Presenter at The PD Collab, Salem, MA with Language Arts and Social Studies topics including the workshop titles: Poetry for Every Classroom, 30 Book Challenge, and Reading & Writing Skills for Social Studies in Grades 4-8

Approximately every other week, students will complete a Google Forms Quiz as an informal check-in to assess ongoing understanding.Grades Offered
Students will need a wide-ruled 9 3/4" x 7 1/2" composition notebook or similar for journaling and notetaking. Students will also need pencils and an eraser for this class. Color pencils are suggested, but optional.
