Journal Like a Spider and Other Grammar Lessons: Intensive Edition!

In this three-week enrichment class, students will read from the picture book Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronin. Guided discussion about the reading excerpt will provide context for daily Grammar lessons, writing tips, and journal prompts.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Setting Up Your Journal
We will set up the Table of Contents and make our first entry. We will review capitalization of titles. Students will create a handwriting sample. The writing lesson will focus on using a web as a way to generate topics.
Lesson 2
Punctuation Pals
We will review capitalization of proper nouns and at the beginning of sentences. Students will learn about four types of punctuation and practice placing them in sentences. Students will learn a journaling Spelling strategy.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Can You Name That Idiom?
Students will discuss common idioms and play an idiom-matching game. The writing lesson will reinforce writing stories with a beginning, middle, and end.
Lesson 4
"It's Mine" - Possession Power
Students will discuss possessive pronouns and learn how to use apostrophes to make possessive nouns. The writing lesson will remind students to consider their five senses when writing descriptions.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Synonym Strategy
Students will play a game to identify synonyms of words found in the reading and learn how to use synonyms for excellent word choice in writing. The writing lesson will focus on tips for writing lists.
Lesson 6
Review
As a review, students will identify punctuation, possessive words, and synonyms in the final pages of the book. Students will also share their favorite idioms and read aloud their favorite journal entry written for this class. It will also be an opportunity to discuss handwriting improvement.
Students will review focused Grammar and English Language Arts skills and apply these skills to their journal writing in each class session. Writing prompts will allow students to develop ideas and create journal entries using different formats. This class provides a fun way for students to maintain writing skills.
Carla Bratland earned her Masters in Elementary Education from Lesley University and has taught 4th and 5th Grade English Language Arts in many setting for over 15 years. Mrs. Bratland has also been a Professional Development Presenter at The PD Collab, Salem, MA with Language Arts and Social Studies topics including the workshop titles: Poetry for Every Classroom, 30 Book Challenge, and Reading & Writing Skills for Social Studies in Grades 4-8.
Learners should be comfortable reading picture book sentences aloud. This book is AR Level 2.5, Lexile 510.
Students will also need to be able to write in print. Cursive is optional. 
Students will need a wide-ruled 9 3/4" x 7 1/2" composition notebook or similar for journaling and notetaking. Students will also need pencils and an eraser for this class. Color pencils are suggested, but optional.
