Is your gifted child looking for a new challenge?

This class is for gifted and talented students who are looking for guidance in helping to prepare their entry for the John Locke Essay Competition.

We work at the student's own pace, but the classes incorporate research, writing and review skills.

A sample schedule might be as follows:
Part 1 - What is an essay? (What is a paragraph?) How does it differ from a more basic composition?
Part 2 - How do we conduct academic research?
Part 3 - How do we structure and plan a coherent essay?
Part 4 - How do we edit and review an essay?

The speed with which we work through the Parts is dependent on the students' previous experience and skills.

I have a Masters in History from the University of Oxford.
I have experiencing in working with students in the field of:
- Philosophy
- Law
- History
- Politics
- Theology
- English

For 2024, I helped over a dozen students prepare their essays. The deadline has now passed, so I am helping students prepare for 2025 entry by developing their research, writing and review skills.

Students will write their essay independently, follow guidance from me about planning, researching, structuring and editing their work.

The John Locke Essay Competition is a fantastic opportunity for gifted young people to stretch their academic muscle and learn how to construct a create a coherent essay. Every year, the John Locke Institute release a series of essay titles on themes relating to each of seven subject categories - Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, Theology and Law - which students can choose from. A winner is chosen from each of the subjects and there is also a grand prize winner. There is also a separate prize awarded for the best essay in the junior category, for under 15s.

The John Locke Essay Competition is hugely prestigious and looks brilliant on university applications. I'm thrilled to be able to help students find out more about this great opportunity.

Students will write any required essays independently, follow guidance from me about planning, researching, structuring and editing their work.

Please get in touch if you think I might be able to help your student.
