In this 6-week study, students will learn the basic skills in JavaScript programming.
Class experience
JavaScript is commonly used for creating web pages alongside HTML and CSS. It makes pages dynamic. It is a simple and powerful programming language. In this 6 week class for the age group 9-11, students will learn about basic coding skills in JavaScript. There will be sessions once a week, each lesson is 60 minutes long. Week 1Lesson 1Data TypesStudents will learn how to define and use text. They will see different types of text formatting. They will learn about different types of numbers and how to use arithmetic operators. Random numbers will be introduced.Week 2Lesson 2ConditionalsStudents will learn about Boolean data types and how to use comparison and logical operators. They also learn about if else conditionals.Week 3Lesson 3Lists and ObjectsThey will learn about useful data types such as lists and dictionary objects. Lists can store multiple items, and dictionary objects can stores multiple key value pairs.Week 4Lesson 4For and While LoopsWe are going to iterate over sequences such as lists and dictionaries. We will practice while and for loops for that.Week 5Lesson 5FunctionsA very important concept will be introduced: Functions make it possible not to write the same piece of code several times, but only one time.Week 6Lesson 6ReviewStudents can practice everything they learned until now.
In this class students will master the basic skills in JavaScript.
Students need a computer or a laptop for the class. Internet connection is required too.

I am going to use repl.it (https://replit.com/~) which is good tool for a group to work on the same project. Students can see, modify and run the same source code. It is a safe site to use. Students need to register and I will invite them to my repl we use in the class. When registering, they should not use their last name for the username. I will only need to know their username. I won't see the email associated with the their account.
