Class Experience

We've all gotten songs stuck in our heads. It happens to me every day! So, what better way to learn new Japanese vocabulary than to get some Japanese music stuck in your head?

In each session we will break down the chorus of one song and translate it together. Japan has a lot of great modern music to choose from, and I'll be selecting from a variety of songs from pop, rock, rap, hip-hop, and anime or game music!

Here are the upcoming scheduled sessions of this class, and the songs for each one:
Fri Mar 26 class: "Peace Sign" by Kenshi Yonezu
Wed Mar 31 class: "Gurenge" by LiSA
Fri Apr 9 class: "Thank You!!" by Home Made Kazoku
Wed Apr 14 class: "Zen Zen Zense" by Radwimps

I'll also happily take song suggestions!

As we break down the chorus and translate each song, you'll learn tips and techniques for doing your own translating, and we'll talk about each word, phrase, or grammar point in the lyrics to learn its full meaning and usage in the language.

Remember: We can always look up song translations using the internet, but lots of things get lost in translation. If you learn to translate it yourself, you're getting the full experience the musician intended! Once you know exactly what all the lyrics in the song are saying, then every time you hear the song or get the chorus stuck in your head, you're practicing all those words and phrases!

So let's have fun and learn some new music together!

Note: This class is intended for students who are familiar with reading Hiragana & Katakana, and have beginner to intermediate level experience with Japanese grammar.
Learning Goals
Students will learn new Japanese vocabulary, grammar patterns, and colloquial phrases; as well as tips and techniques for doing their own translating outside of class.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class is recommended for older teens (14+) mostly due to the material (in particular some of the grammar) being a bit more technical compared with my other classes. The song selections will be kept G or PG at highest in terms of the content of lyrics and music videos.
Supply List
Students should bring paper or a notebook and pen or pencil so that they can write down our translations during the class, and take other notes.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
