US Grade 3 - 5
Haikus are a great way to gain an awareness of nature and the world that surrounds us. First, I will teach the mechanics of a haiku and provide examples of great haikus. Then, I will teach the skill of paying attention to the five senses to gain a better understanding of what is happening in their environment. We will discuss the beauty in simplicity and how haikus can be a challenge to try and say what you feel in so few words. I will encourage each learner to go to an outside space to listen to nature and see what they can write! I will ask them to write a haiku inspired by what they hear, smell, feel, taste, and see around them. Attached will be a guide to help break the words into syllables and this will be used as a rough draft. Then they will write their final draft on a beautiful template for display. Lastly, we will all share our haikus with the class, as publication is the last step in the writing process. The learners will be able to use the template included for drafting future haikus. I will also provide two haikus that can be displayed at home just for fun.

I’m a certified teacher in Elementary Education with my Master’s in Education Leadership, with experience in both in the US and internationally. My family and I had the privilege of living overseas for 15 years, teaching in international schools around the globe. I've lived in New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Bosnia and Herzegovina! I value teaching small groups, students from diverse backgrounds, instilling curiosity in my students, and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning. Over the course of my 18 years in the classroom, I have gained valuable insight into best practices and ways to connect with learners. I strive for each of my learners to know that I care deeply about them and their education. Connection is the base for all authentic learning.
On Outschool, I am teaching an array of different classes: math camps, problem solving, traveling, book clubs, nature journaling, tutoring, choose-your-own-adventure, reading comprehension courses, and novel studies to list a few. I believe in smaller class sizes to ensure quality of education and engagement.
Outside of teaching, I am an avid long-distance trail runner, reader, and traveler! I'm equally passionate about all three. I love anything outdoors. Travel has taught me valuable life-long lessons that I love sharing with others. I have a teacher husband (also on Outschool!), and two young children that I adore.
