In this class, students will learn about American artist, James Castle. Growing up deaf in rural Idaho in the early 20th century, James struggled to communicate with the world around him. James learned to create art using everyday items and depicted the life of his community and family. James Castle is celebrated for being a prolific, self-taught artist who's art is now highly sought after for its simplistic depictions of rural life in the early 20th century. Students will use similar materials and techniques to create their own version of Castle's work. Students will follow along step-by-step with the instructor. They are encouraged to interact with the teacher and ask questions and discuss the topic.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the life of James Castle, his materials and how being deaf effected his artistic life.
