Class Experience

We will learn about static electricity with fun hands-on experience. As a group we will make predictions before each experiment based on discussion and prior knowledge about the properties of static electricity. I will guide students through a series of hands-on experiments using the materials required in the materials list. We will use readily common materials, including balloons, aluminum foil strips, party confetti, Rice Crispy cereal and more. (If students choose to be observers only, that is also an option.)
After the students have conducted the each experiment, we will determine whether our prediction was correct or not. Students will conduct the experiments individually, but we will discuss them as a group.
At the conclusion of the class, students will have a basic understanding of positive, negative and neutral charges, and conductors and insulators. This information will be a basic building block for future science instruction, but in a fun, hands-on learning experience. I teach science with enthusiasm and energy, and my hope is that students will love science as a result of enjoying it.
Learning Goals
Students will understand positive, negative and neutral charges in atoms.
Students will understand how conductors and insulators work.
Students will understand the effect of positive and negative charges on common objects.
