US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Hi there! My name is Ms. Elizabeth, and I'm offering this private 1:1 tutoring class that focuses on phonics instruction and phonological awareness, essential stepping stones on your learner's journey to becoming a fluent reader. During our first session, I will assess what reading level your learner is on through fun activities and games that measure skills in phonological awareness, phonics, letter recognition, and spelling. Then we will follow a scope and sequence to learn the foundational skills your learner needs in order to start reading fluently. My tutoring program follows the research-based science of reading principles, including teaching oral language, phonological awareness and phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading/language comprehension, and writing. For this particular tutoring class, we will be focusing on the phonics and phonological awareness components of early literacy; however, the other principles will be sprinkled in throughout our lessons as well. I will also be using various resources as a guide in our word study journey and early reading lessons. We will be using various decodables in class, including some from Reading A to Z, Learning at the Primary Pond, and ones that I have created. These decodables will be selected based on the phonics skills we're learning as well as your child's interests. The day before class, you will receive all printable PDF materials you will need. If you’re not able to print anything, that’s okay! Just let me know, and we can work together by using any materials you have on hand to make the class interactive and engaging for your learner. In addition to printable PDF materials, we may use Nearpod for some assessments and activities. If you would rather not use this third-party app, please let me know, and we will stick to paper assessments and activities. If we use Nearpod, I will send you a code along with any PDF materials needed before class so that you and your learner can access the Nearpod lesson ahead of time. Since this is a learner-directed and individualized class, topics and themes will depend on your learner and their interests as well as their reading level. Our class routine will look very similar for each class. During class, we will: ✨ Play a phonics review game ✨ Introduce the new phonics pattern ✨Practice the phonics pattern (word mapping or a similar phonics activity) ✨ Preview and read the decodable passage together (use the new phonics skill in-context) ✨ Discuss the decodable passage ✨ Practice encoding (writing) or building words with the phonics skill
Learning Goals
Learners will:
✨Follow a structured scope and sequence, learning phonics patterns that build on each other
✨Practice those phonics patterns through hands-on activities (like word mapping)
✨Practice those phonics patterns through decoding a decodable passage

Parental Guidance
One optional material listed below is playdough (as a sensory material to assist in learning activities). Just note that playdough does contain gluten, so if your child is sensitive to wheat or gluten, you can use other sensory materials such as small countable items instead.
For this class, we may be using a third-party app, Nearpod, for assessments and some activities. This external resource required parental consent to access. An account will not be required, however you will be asked to add your child's name when logging in using the Nearpod code I will send you. If you would rather not use Nearpod, that is totally fine! Just let me know and we will stick to paper assessments only.
Supply List
For this tutoring class, the following materials could be very helpful for your child's learning experience: ✨paper and something to write with (pens, pencils, markers, or even crayons are fine!) ✨a dry-erase board and dry-erase marker ✨magnetic letters (if you have them) ✨any sensory materials you have on hand, such as small countable items (like pom poms or small toys) or even playdough (optional)
