Students read and discuss Stargirl. Great story for kids who march to a creative drum and/or ever struggled with belonging, social norms or identify as neurodivergent. Discussions on belonging vs. fitting in. ELA activities posted weekly.
Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
We'll meet once a week for 45 minutes. Reading expectation is approximately 50 pages a week. Discussion questions promote critical thinking and reflecting on the themes in Stargirl such as: conformity, bullying, belonging, friendship, social norms, and neurodiversity. We'll discuss metaphors, turning points, foreshadowing, and mood vs. tone. If comfortable, we'll share our life experiences with conformity and bullying. This class is taught in English.
- Students learn the words conformity and nonconformity. Students are asked to consider when social norms are or are not important to follow. Students are asked to think about the difference between fitting in and belonging. Students practice close reading skills. Students learn four literary terms: turning point, metaphor, foreshadowing, and mood vs tone.
