Is a hot dog a sandwich? Using the fundamental skills students will learn, they will write and deliver a 3-5 minute persuasive speech regarding this question! In week one, students will learn what makes a good persuasive speech and how to properly write an outline for their speech. Using an outline example provided, students will write their own speech between the first and second class meeting. In week two, students will deliver their 3-5 minute persuasive speeches to the class and attempt to persuade us as to whether or not a hot dog is indeed a sandwich or if it is not. Following the two week course, I will provide individual constructive feedback via email to the student regarding both their written outline and their speech delivery. With a pending PhD in communication and experience teaching collegiate public speaking courses, I feel confident that this type of speech is one of the most important for high school students to understand. Not only will they know how to deliver prior to taking their first collegiate public speaking course, they will gain confidence in speaking in front of a group!
