Class Experience

During our 6-week session, dancers will learn proper stretching and warm ups as well as the basic steps and movements of Irish Dance. By the end of 6 weeks, they will have learned a traditional Irish Reel and Jig and will be familiar with proper technique. We will practice with traditional Irish music and the dancers will be able to perform some of their moves to the upbeat music by the end of the session. The classes will be interactive, with each child receiving feedback and critiques as the class moves along. We'll also play some fun Irish Dance games at the end of each class. Dancers should have a small area in which to dance and wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing. Dancers may dance in their socks and it's a good idea to have a water bottle on hand.

Week 1: We'll get to know one another then get started with stretches and basic warm-ups. We'll move along to simple active dance drills and begin learning the foundation steps of Irish Dance ("3s" and "overs".) We'll also begin learning a reel step!

Week 2: We'll start with our warm-ups, drills, foundation steps and work on our 1st and 2nd reel step and try them to the music. We'll also begin learning the light jig!

Week 3: We'll start with our warm-ups, drills, foundation steps, reel steps, and begin learning the 2nd step of the light jig!

Week 4: Review, review, review! We'll practice hard on all the material we've learned in the first 3 weeks to make sure your student understands the steps and begin trying them to the music in earnest.

Week 5: More review! We want to make sure your student can fluently complete their pieces so we'll work hard on mastering the steps to the music.

Week 6: We'll finish up by going through everything we've learned. By this time, students should have a lot of the basic steps to the music and will be able to perform their dances for friends and family!
