US Grade 1 - 4
This 4 week flex course will have two insect videos and two craft videos each week. We will cover the following insects: Monarch Butterfly, Luna Moth, Ladybug, Blue Bottle Fly, Cricket, European Mantis, Green Darner Dragonfly, and Bumblebee. The insect videos will cover vocabulary to talk about different insects including their parts, where they live, when they are active, what they eat, their life cycle, and how they interact with humans. The insect videos include lots of photos and facts and are 10-15 minutes long. I try to keep them very entertaining. I also include links to videos on Youtube in the classroom posts. I have curated and embedded the links on Outschool to be safe for your child and provide extra information. There are craft projects on days following each insect video. The crafts vary in length quite a bit and some do involve drying time. The longest craft video is about 25 minutes while the shortest is 8. I try to use mostly materials you would find around your house - see schedule below for more details. On Fridays, we will have a Kahoot quiz and we compare and contrast the insects from that week. The Kahoot will draw questions from the insect videos we watch that week to check understanding. The class schedule of specific topics will be: Week 1: Butterflies and Moths - Monarch Butterfly, Luna Moth. Crafts - Egg Carton Caterpillar, Coffee Filter Butterfly Week 2: Beetles and Flies - Ladybug, Blue Bottle Fly. Crafts - Paper Plate Ladybugs, Designer Bug Trap Week 3: Grasshoppers and Praying Mantises - Cricket, European Mantis. When I was 11 years old, my 6th grade science teacher gave us the assignment to do an insect collection. I enjoyed it so much that I joined 4-H and continued my collection until I left for college. My own daughters have also started insect collecting. As a 4-H advisor, I have enjoyed helping several members with their own insect projects. Now that my daughters have stopped, I plan to take over and expand their collections since mine was lost in a house fire many years ago. I love collecting, learning, and teaching about insects!
