Class Experience

In this class we will learn the alphabet, colors and a few animal signs. No previous knowledge is required so come ready to learn! Sign language is a second language for me since I have a brother who is deaf. I have been signing for over 35 years. I am a certified elementary school teacher and have taught on the online platform for over a year now. This class will be engaging, fun and exciting. It is perfect for the young learner! I teach by the "I do, We do, You do" model. I will use flashcards and props to help the learner to more readily grasp the sign we are learning. My teaching style is to be patient with children but to also be enthusiastic! Children learn at their own pace and I feel very equipped to maintain a child's attention, make learning fun and encourage them as they try new things. This class will be full of interactions as that is exactly what sign language is. I grew up with a brother who is deaf so this culture is second nature to me as is sign language. My own three children are learning it as well!

Learning Goals

In this one time class we will learn the ABC's, the rainbow color words and 5-10 animal signs. Children soak up second languages at this age so they can easily grasp this amount of material in our time together!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Heather Lett. I am a certified elementary school teacher and have taught in the public, private, homeschool and virtual arenas for over 17 years. I believe that all children can learn and do hard things with the right guidance and support. Being patient, engaging, encouraging and fun are ways to cultivate relational equity with your students. Breaking down the topics to be learned in digestible ways for the young learner has always been second nature to me. Watching a student light up when they realize they have attained some new information is pure joy! I grew up with two brothers, one of whom is deaf, so I am also fluent in sign language.
