I am a competitive kickboxer and fitness coach; where self-defense is one of the skills that I teach. I have been coaching kickboxing for 4 years and during that time ran self-defense seminars throughout the year. As a mother I want to know that my children will be able to protect themselves if something was to happen and to learn to be aware of surroundings so that they stay safe.
All worksheets will be posted on the classroom page. A safe open area is essential to practice the techniques.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
When discussing the myths or reasons why self-defense may be used there may be sensitive topics that come up (e.g. if a student shares a story about being bullied or news report relevant to the topic that the class wants to discuss). Self-defense is typically used to escape from a predator so the scenarios may include thinking about what an attacker might look like; however I do try to ensure that any stories or information that is given is always kept within the classroom and all students are treated with respect. Please be aware that there are always risk of injuries whenever there is physical activity required. To avoid injury students need to warm-up and stretch and ensure that they are doing the techniques correctly the way the teacher teaches.
