Students are welcome to finish their work after class if they don't finish it, and then show it off next class! This is optional, of course. Feel free to color/draw the animals differently. Be as creative as you like! This is merely a guide to practice!

Class Experience

This beginner class will be dedicated to learning the basics of the digital art program Procreate while also learning how to draw animals. We will include, but not limited to: learning the functions of the program about layers and layer organization, clipping masks, overlay/multiply layers, brush selections, opacity options, selection and duplication tools, undo and redo, and pencil-to-ink-to-color drawing process. Artistic freedom is important in this class so please feel free to experiment with the program, but please do so after class so the learner does not miss other important information. I will go step-by-step and demonstrate each tool that I teach patiently and encourage students to follow along. I have more of a demonstrative-hybrid teaching style and the class will be learner-dictated, meaning that I will allow the students majority to choose the animal that we draw. Primarily, we will be drawing from sketch to line art. If time allows, we will also do base coloring, but depends on the complexity of the animal chosen.

Please note that if a student wishes to attend this class using traditional mediums of pencil, pens, and paper, they are welcome to join along, as long as they don't mind listening to me teach about Procreate. The student may feel frustrated with the ease of the undo button, for example, or the multi-layer ability. I will do my best to include all of my students and ensure they have fun while learning. This class will be taught as if the learner has just opened up procreate for the first time and is interested in learning to draw animals. However, intermediate learners are also welcome as a refresher, or just to practice drawing animals. Whether you aspire to become a professional artist or just need a create outlet, you will find a patient teacher, constructive criticism, and new like-minded friends to learn with. I look forward to seeing my students in class!

Also note that students are strongly encouraged to have an Apple Pen or alternative compatible stylus. Using a mouse or finger can be extremely limiting and time-constrictive to the learner and can be incredibly frustrating. It is also possible to download Procreate to your phone while using a stylus. I have read that the Logitech crayon is also compatible with Procreate and the iPad.

If you have any questions about the class, please feel free to email me at any time.

Learning Goals

The student will be learning the basics of Procreate which is, but not limited to: Page sizes, layers, clipping masks, color wheel, overlay/multiply layers, layer organization, brush selections, opacity options, brush sizes, selection tool, duplication selection, and pencil-to-ink-to-color drawing process. For drawing animals, we will be using the pencil tool to sketch out the composition, break them down into simple shapes, and then connect the shapes to form the animal. Next, we will select an ink pen tool and draw the animal with black lines that create line art. Time-willing, we will then select a base color for the whole animal and work our way through creating a colored masterpiece using the above basic tools of Procreate.

Students will also be learning how to draw animals in a cute, semi-realistic style. This will begin using basic shapes and then gradually evolve into their familiar form. Students are free to choose their animal's colors and designs. The animal will be chosen by majority rule.

Just know, they will likely not understand or gain knowledge with the digital art medium that I will be teaching. I leave this up to the parent or guardian to decide whether the student will be willing and able to participate in class.

I have been working with digital art since 2013. While the programs I've used vary, they all share many of the same tools and ease-of-use. I have worked with Adobe Suites--namely Illustrator, Animation, and Photoshop, and used other programs such as Krita, Clip Art Studio, and Procreate. I am constantly trying out new and exciting digital art programs to keep my knowledge on the subject up to date. I've drawn many illustrations, portraits, web comics, and even vector images as well as animation. This class focuses on the fundamentals of drawing and the basics of Procreate. I have been drawing traditionally since childhood and have always had a passion for teaching and inspiring others on their art journeys.
