 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to Art Analysis
In this lesson, we will introduce ourselves, share our initial thoughts on poetry, and dive into an analysis of a captivating work by artist, Hebru Brantley.
Lesson 2
Exploring Hebru Brantley's Life and Artistic Influence
In our second session, we'll delve into Hebru Brantley's life through a focused article and explore how his experiences influence his art. After revisiting his painting, we'll conclude with a discussion on how understanding an artist's background enhances our appreciation and interpretation of their work.
Lesson 3
Exploring Langston Hughes and How His Life Shapes His Poetry
In our third session, we'll apply the analysis framework we used with Hebru Brantley's painting to a poem by Langston Hughes. We'll start by analyzing the poem, then learn about Hughes' life and how his experiences shaped his writing. After gaining this insight, we'll return to the poem to deepen our understanding of its themes and messages. To wrap up, each student will be assigned a different poet and poem to explore independently prior to the final class.
Lesson 4
Share and Celebrate
In our final session, each student will present their analysis of a poet and their work, highlighting how the poet's background influenced their interpretation of their assigned poem. We'll then review and discuss the key concepts and skills we've developed throughout the course, reflecting on how these insights enhance our understanding of poetry and art.
Students will develop skills in using art analysis techniques to better understand poetry, gaining a deeper appreciation for both forms of expression. They will also learn how an artist's or poet's personal history can shape their work, discovering the important connections between an artist's life and their creations.
