Class Experience

Ah, we're all writers, aren't we? We all like to make up stories or rewrite ones that already exist! This class will allow students to put those thoughts down on paper in an orderly, well thought out way, in the style of a play script. Scripting is different than writing a story, because it takes into context a stage, a set, entrances and exits of characters, and other unique factors. However, good writing is the same for any style in that it must include an interesting plot, a conflict, and a resolution. Following is the week by week breakdown of the class.
Week 1 - Story basics: The story arc and discussion; examples
Week 2 - How script writing differs from traditional writing; explore scripting a well-known short story
Week 3 - Brainstorming ideas; learning to outline
Week 4 - From outline to script; begin working on scripts in class
Week 5 - Sharing short scenes in class
Week 6 - Final scripts; read through portions of each student's work
Hope you can join us for a fun venture through the art of playwriting!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I teach/direct students age 6-college and have been doing that in various positions for over 20 years. The classes I've taught have covered characterization, staging, improvisation, script-writing, etc.

I am the former Education Director at Germantown Community Theatre, and have also taught/directed high school, junior college, and summer theatre programs.

I absolutely love watching students grow as they participate in theatre. There is really nothing else that challenges them on so many levels including creativity, critical thinking, self-confidence, teamwork, communication skills, time management, focus, as well as learning about literature, author's intent, and the list goes on...

Decades ago, when I finished my student teaching experience I vowed I would never have anything to do with teaching children again... Haha! Never say never :)
