Class experience

This class is taught in English.
1. Students will demonstrate proficiency in basic paper crafting techniques, such as cutting, folding, and gluing, to create aesthetically pleasing journal pages.
2. Students will develop skills in selecting and repurposing materials, emphasizing the use of recycled and eco-friendly resources in their junk journaling projects.
3. Students will learn and apply principles of design, including composition, color theory, and visual balance, to create visually appealing and harmonious journal pages.
4. Students will explore various collage techniques, including layering, decoupage, and image transfer, to incorporate a variety of materials into their journal pages.
5. Students will experiment with different textures, such as fabric, lace, and textured papers, to add depth and tactile elements to their junk journal creations.
6. Students will develop storytelling skills by incorporating personal narratives, memories, and emotions into their journaling, effectively conveying their experiences through visual art.
7. Students will explore and analyze examples of vintage ephemera, learning to incorporate these elements into their journals to evoke a sense of nostalgia and historical context.
8. Students will develop problem-solving skills by experimenting with different solutions to overcome challenges and creatively adapt their designs during the journaling process.
9. Students will engage in reflective thinking and self-evaluation, critically assessing their own work and the work of others, providing constructive feedback, and applying suggestions for improvement.
10. Students will demonstrate effective communication skills by actively participating in class discussions, sharing their artistic process, and explaining the inspiration behind their journaling choices.
As an experienced teacher, I bring a wealth of expertise spanning various art forms such as mixed media, fiber arts, beadwork, and jewelry making, accumulated over 31 years.  Additionally, my dual licensure as a K-12 teacher, coupled with over 16 years of working with students across different grades and abilities, equips me with a versatile skill set. I have extensive experience in teaching diverse subjects, including behavior and social skills, to create inclusive learning environments. As a published poet, I possess a genuine enthusiasm for teaching reading and writing, instilling a love for books and inspiring students along the way.

Various recycled papers (e.g., old book pages, scrap paper, magazines, calendars)
Watercolor paints and brushes (1-2 colors and brushes will be just fine)
Adhesive materials (e.g., glue stick, double-sided tape, adhesive dots)
Scissors  

Suggested Materials:
Vintage ephemera (e.g., postcards, stamps, tickets, labels, photographs)
Scrapbooking paper and patterned paper
Decorative papers (e.g., tissue paper, wrapping paper, scrapbooking paper)
Assorted fabrics (scraps, lace, ribbon)
Assorted textured papers (e.g., handmade paper, embossed paper)
Markers, colored pencils, or gel pens
Collage materials (e.g., old maps, sheet music, newspaper clippings)
Ruler or straight edge
Hole punch or awl
Embellishments (e.g., buttons, beads, charms, sequins)
Stencils or stamps (optional)
Washi tape or decorative tape (optional)
Gel medium or Mod Podge (optional)
Brushes for applying glue or mediums (optional)
 
 Parental Guidance is required for the use of sharp objects.  Students will be using scissors, an awl (if available to the student) and needles for this class.
