Introduction to Music History: Twentieth-Century (Self-Paced)
In this 14-week series of online, pre-recorded flex classes, students will explore music from the Twentieth-Century through written and analytic assignments on topics such as jazz, Debussy and Scriabin, Stravinsky, and minimalist and recent trends, all taught within an online music class environment from the Music & Language Learning Center by Kristine Dizon.

The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to music history from the twentieth century. We will discuss how the transition between the Romantic and the Twentieth-Century through musical forms, composers, musical works, and cultural history. The following is a weekly schedule of what will be covered. Learners will be expected to keep a listening journal to record their thoughts on the pieces learned in class. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟑: 𝐁𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐉𝐀𝐙𝐙: 𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 Learners will learn about the beginnings of jazz and ragtime. An assignment will be provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟒: 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃 𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋 Learners will be introduced to the Second Viennese School and its importance. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟗: 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐈𝐍 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐓 𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐀 Learners will learn about music in Stalinist Russia and the composers that were prominent during this period of time. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟏𝟎: 𝐖𝐀𝐑 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐒: 𝐌𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐀𝐄𝐍 & 𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐍 Learners will continue to learn more about the connection between politics and social themes in music through Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time and Britten's Peter Grimes. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟏𝟏: 𝐌𝐈𝐃𝐃𝐋𝐄 𝟐𝟎𝐓𝐇 𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐘 𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂: 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐃, 𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐋, 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐁𝐄𝐑 Learners will be introduced to American tonal music in the 20th century including Copland, Still, and Barber. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟏𝟐: 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓-𝐖𝐀𝐑 𝐀𝐕𝐀𝐍𝐓-𝐆𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 & 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐌 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 Learners will learn about post-war avant-garde music and how music was used in film. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟏𝟑: 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐒 Learners will be introduced to minimalist music and current trends in music composition. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟏𝟒: 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐒 Learners will present their final projects in class. The prompt will be provided by the instructor in class 13. Assignments will be due two days prior to the scheduled meeting to allow the instructor to provide timely feedback to the learner via the Outschool classroom. The assignments are designed to help reinforce the topics learned in each session. While it is recommended to purchase the textbook, the teacher will provide all the materials needed for the learners in this class. This course will use video examples, assignment explanations, and will provide feedback. Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to help learners reflect the material that they have learned. Students will interact with the instructor through the use Quizlet and play Kahoot! with the instructor and other learners of the course.
