8 live meetings
7 hrs 20 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Every class will end with some homework problems posted to the classroom. These should be done before the next class and the code posted back before the next class. The homework will not be very difficult but it would help learners solidify their programming skills.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner Level
This class gives an introduction to Java. Java is a great programming language for teenagers to learn. In this class, we will start with language syntax, variables, reserved words, operations on various data types. We will then teach if conditions, for and while loops to do basic algorithms. We will then learn how to think in an object oriented way and create classes. Learners will be challenged to design a problem of their liking and discuss which classes and methods would be involved. Topics covered: Part 1: (not part of these sessions) Topic 1: Basics of Java language, using variables Topic 2: Strings and basic operations on Strings Topic 3: Advanced String operations Topic 4: Methods, arguments and return types Topic 5: Loops - using for and while loops to solve problems Part 2: Topic 6: Introduction to Arrays Topic 7: Booleans and arrays Topic 8: Classes, objects and constructors Topic 9: Class relationships - hasA relationship Topic 10: Class Inheritance - isA relationship In each class we will start with learning something new and then learners will be asked to do a small exercise to make the concept really sink in. Learners will use an online programming site called onecompiler.com to type and test their code. This helps us focus on the class material and not the IDE. If learners already have a Java IDE(IntelliJ or Eclipse) installed and can get help using it, they may use that instead too. IDE is totally optional. The class will only use onecompiler.com throughout. We will learn concepts using a mix of code as well as slides. Both will be available to learners during the class. If learners miss a class. they should watch the recording and do the examples taught before their next class. Homework is also given after each class.

External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
We will code on a third party website called onecompiler.com. This website does not require a login. Learners will need to type their code in the left hand side and click a button to Run their program. The program will run on their server and show the results on the right hand side.
