What’s included

3 live meetings
1 hrs 15 mins in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. Day 1: Research their invention ideas to make sure their ideas are truly original. Between Day 2 and Day 3- Students will complete their project and prepare for Day 3 presentations.
Assessment
Students will evaluate themselves and their research/ project. I will provide feedback for parents/ guardians based on a science research/ project rubric to ensure the learner included key elements in their final project.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Day 1: We will discuss the vocabulary: inventor, inventions, and patent. I will help them generate ideas for possible invention projects by posing different questions and scenarios. We will also discuss several inventors, their inventions, and brainstorm what people did before their inventions, what needs were being met, and how their inventions are beneifial.

Before day 2: students will research their idea to ensure it is not already a patented item and that it is in fact, original.

Day 2: Students will share their research with the class. We will discuss the supplies/ resources that may be needed for each student. It is not necessary that students create a prototype, they can also illustrate their invention. Students will write down a list of possible needed supplies.
We will discuss how they plan to present their project- digitally or on a poster board/ paper. We will learn more about the elements needed in a science fair/research poster board.

Before day 3: Students will complete each section of their presentation (on paper/printout, digital copy, or on a poster board)
I will upload a copy of a sample poster presentation they can use as a guide or complete. I will also provide a link for students that want to use Google Docs to complete a digital presentation.

Day 3: Students will present their presentations.
Using a student-friendly rubric, the student will also evaluate their own research/project.
Students will discuss ideas for marketing/ advertising that may benefit each inventor's project idea.

Class structure:
Introductions, rules, schedule
Introduction to new vocabulary
Group interaction
Direct instruction
Question and Answer
Projects- can be done on poster board, paper, or digitally
Visuals, audio, and videos

Teaching style:
I enjoy getting all students involved in their learning, encouraging group conversations, and checking for understanding throughout the lesson. I use individual accommodations for each student as class goes on, based on the needs of the individual.

No former knowledge is necessary-- just a love for science, innovation, and research!

Other Details

Supply List
Students will need supplies based on their individual projects. I will be urging all students to think ideas that do not require additional purchases AND/OR to illustrate their invention rather than making a prototype.
I will provide a student-friendly rubric and worksheet (this does not need to be printed but some students may want to print it for reference)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
