Class Experience

This is an introduction to hoop dance. We will start by building a strong foundation of basic movements with our hula hoops and learn to incorporate them into dance. We will always start with breathing exercises and stretching before moving into warming up our cores with waist hooping. From there each class we will cover at least one "trick" and go over a few ways of incorporating it into dance. Mastery of these tricks will often take some outside of class practice. As with most skills, the more time you put in with your hoop the easier it becomes. I teach by demonstration, so your learner will be following my step by step verbal and visual instructions throughout the class.

Week of <March 26th>. Topic: Hand me a hoop! After stretching and warming up with some waist hooping exercises we will switch our focus into our hands where we will begin to get comfortable moving the hoop from arm to hand and hand to hand. We will cover at least one fun hand hooping trick to spark learners imaginations on the endless possibilities of hand hooping.
Week of <April 2nd>. Topic: Belly, Bottoms and knees. After stretching and warming up with waist hooping exercises we will begin to move our hoops below the waist focusing on learning how to keep the hoop rotating. We will be spending a good chunk of time going over the basics of leg hooping.
Week of <April 9th>. Topic: weaves. After stretching and warming up with waist hooping exercises we will move into learning the basic two beat weave with both hands.
Week of <April 16th>. Topic: Time for a break (or two). After stretching and warming up with waist hooping exercises we will work towards being able to stop (break) the rotation of the hoop and send it soaring in the opposite direction.

Parental Guidance
Please - be advised - this is a physical fitness class which requires an open workout space with a clear floor. If you choose to wear shoes, make sure they are sturdy athletic shoes tied properly. My personal preference is bare feet. I recommend socks only on carpet. I always recommend having water handy. Drink as needed throughout the class.
Supply List
Each learner needs a hula hoop. I suggest one that comes up to the students belly button if not 2" higher. A toy store hoop will do the trick for anyone trying to see if these classes are a good fit, however if your learner plans on sticking with hoop classes I would recommend a handmade dance hoop ($20-$60 depending on how fancy you get).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach a variety of Circus arts and yoga classes. My favorite classes are hoop dance and aerial hammock. I have over 13 years of circus arts performance and teaching experience. I believe that when you are having fun learning happens naturally. I always encourage students to listen to their body and respect where they are each and every day. When I am not teaching or performing I enjoy hiking, sledding and traveling with my family.
