Class Experience

This class will introduce several floor-based gymnastics skills. These are skills which are possible to learn at home IF you are able to create a physically safe space.

The class will consist of identifying the skills through a video library. Then I will ask the student which of the skills they are most interested in learning. I will give drills/exercises to them, along with an explanation of why they are beneficial, for them to practice. As they practice these during class, I will be making comments of encouragement and suggestions of how better to master the drill/exercise. How much feedback each child needs will determine what happens next. I will also be giving the child an individualized “workout” they can do outside of class to help them master the skill they have chosen. Within a few classes, I can also give a good estimation of the length of time it is likely going to take to master the skill. This class is primarily for beginners with no prior gymnastics experience or for those who want to learn these particular skills but have not made much progress in prior gymnastics classes. “Homework” is not required for the class but if you do it, you will progress much quicker.
Learning Goals
The skills that will be introduced are:
Rolls: forward, pike, straddle, backward. Jumps: Straight, Tuck, Straddle, Pike. Handstand. Cartwheel. One-handed Cartwheel. Bridge. Bridge Kick-over

Parental Guidance
If there is a concern for safety regarding this class, please keep in mind your child will not be asked to do something they are not physically ready for. An example of this is: your child will not be asked to attempt a handstand if their arms are not even strong enough to support their body weight (upside down). They would initially work on holding themselves up with their feet only slightly elevated (similar to a push-up position). It is important that the environment they set up for themselves to take the class is safe. Ideally, they would have a somewhat sturdy folding mat. If not, a flat surface where they can put many pillows and blankets can work. I will not have the kids practice any skills or drills if their (home) environment does not allow them to do so in a safe way. Please be sure that you as the parents are present during class to help supervise the students and ensure safety.
