Intro to Writing a Chapter Book with a Published Novelist

Many kids start novels, but can they finish them? In this workshop, kids will have fun developing their characters, planning the beginning, middle and end for their chapter book, and they'll start their first chapter!

Class Experience

Do you love writing unusual characters in strange worlds? Or maybe you love realistic stories about kids just like you?

I'm a young adult novelist with two novels published by big publishers and I love helping kids and teens write their own books. I love to laugh and have fun during the class, but I don't call on kids to read or talk because for some kids, this can make them nervous. For this workshop, the focus is on writing. Kids can give ideas and ask questions in the chat so that we have more time for everyone to write.

I believe that your voice is important and your ideas are important. I want to help you to write the story you want to write. I help you brainstorm ideas for your characters, the world and the plot. We'll think up ideas for the beginning, middle and end of your story., and talk about what to do if you get stuck.

Then you'll write! We'll use fun multi-sensory props - bring a weird object, something that has a smell, a color you love, something that makes a noise to the class, a notebook and markers.

At the end of the workshop, I'll give you two pages of things to do if you ever get stuck so that you can keep writing all the way to the end! You can also join one of my weekly novel-writing classes.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to write an interesting story with characters who are full of personality in a fascinating setting. They'll write a bunch of ideas for their beginning, middle and end. They'll learn how to write a scene and they'll start the scene in the workshop.

Master's Degree from Vermont College of Fine Arts
I'm a published novelist with both a journalism degree and an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults, and I've taught for over twenty-five years. I worked as the first curriculum director of WriteGirl LA and developed the organization's multi-sensory and interactive approach to writing, which has won WriteGirl a lot of acclaim. I understand how sensitive the creative process can be, and my goal is always to make my students feel more joyful and empowered by using their own unique voice to tell stories.
