We're in the golden age of Standup Comedy, as demonstrated by the dozens of standup specials available on Netflix. This one-time course will get your learner's creative juices flowing and give them an opportunity to start writing jokes in a supportive environment. We will cover the foundations of humor, and the structure of a standup comedy set. The course will be interactive. We will cover some theory in a lecture format, but the bulk of the time will be spent brainstorming and workshopping jokes. We will listen to some jokes from professional comedians, and discuss the structure of those jokes. We will then discuss what it takes to be good at standup comedy. From there, we will collaboratively brainstorm punchlines based on setups. Students will be encouraged to start keeping a joke journal, and will be able to start seeding that journal in this course. **Disclaimer**: I am a full-time Outschool employee. I will be teaching this course separately of that capacity.

Parental Guidance
At the beginning of the class, all students will agree to avoid inappropriate or sensitive topics, and I will similarly avoid sharing any material not appropriate for teens and pre-teens. Note that some recordings we listen to may include occasional swear words.
