Class Experience

Welcome to the prerequisite session for the "Level Up - Reading Comprehension" course. All students must attend this session before participating in subsequent Level Up courses.

SUBJECT TAUGHT: The content for this course includes English Language Arts, specifically reading comprehension.

TOPICS COVERED: The topics covered will be:
--Reading comprehension strategies in preparation for standardized tests
--Level Up gameplay rules for ongoing "next" course "Level Up: Reading Comprehension"

CLASS STRUCTURE:
This session is designed to immerse students in an innovative, game-based approach to enhancing reading comprehension skills. We will walk students through the unique process of using the gaming process of Level Up to master reading comprehension, while also introducing them to various skill levels that correspond with their progressive learning strategies.

The session kicks off with a connection question. Students will be asked to discuss what they know about test taking strategies prior to discussing researched based strategies that will form the foundation for their learning journey. Students will be given examples of strategies for guided practice. Next, we'll delve into the specifics of the "Level Up" game by providing a comprehensive tutorial. We will outline the process before students tackle a timed sample reading passage and question-and-answer segment, mirroring real-life test conditions. The sample question(s) will focus on applying literary terms such as theme, plot, or author's purpose to the text.

Following this, we'll provide the correct answer and the related literary term, promoting an understanding of the context and concepts. To wrap up the session, we'll share a strategy to help students arrive at the correct answer, lending them a practical tool to crack reading comprehension questions. This session is engineered to help demystify reading comprehension questions in corresponding Level Up sessions and on future standardized tests.

TEACHING STYLE: During the course, the instructor will use a student-centered approach combined with lecture and sample gaming activities. Students will be free to ask and answer questions throughout the course.
