Class Experience

ようこそみなさん!
Welcome everyone to Intro to Intermediate Japanese!

In this course, we will begin to advance further into speaking, reading, and writing as we dive into more kanji, grammar, and vocabulary! This course, like the previous course (Beginners Japanese 2!) is designed to teach students some of the material that would be covered up through the Japanese Language Proficiency Test's second level, the JLPT-N4. The assumption is that students in this class already know most of the grammar that would be covered up through the N5 test.
Students will learn new grammar concepts in class, where we will practice speaking and listening to one another with the grammar being studied that week. Between classes, students will be enrolled in my flashcard course where they will be asked to study fifteen minutes a day to keep up with the material we are learning in class. Besides the flashcard homework, this class has occasional reading, listening, and writing assignments. These additional assignments will generally take no longer than half an hour for the whole week.

Students who have not taken Beginner's Japanese 1 or 2 are free to enroll in this course, but they will be expected to know most of the information taught in that class. At the bottom of this description, you will find a list of the kanji covered in the first two classes.

The curriculum below focuses on verb grammar, but we will be learning nouns, particles, and other bits of grammar throughout the class :)

Week 1: We will learn how to say, "it's easy/hard to..." and learn a new imperative form.
Week 2: We will study new ways to say we want, wanted, or didn't want various outcomes, (as well as how to express need)
Week 3: We will cover new conjunctions, build time sequence into sentences, and learn how to do something while doing something else.
Week 4: We will learn casual ways to talk about errands, and we will discuss how to say, "I heard that..."
Week 5: We will begin to study conditionals, and we will learn how to talk about appearances ('it seems...").
Week 6: We will continue studying conditionals, and we will begin to talk about expectations (e.g. "it should be here by now").
Week 7: We will learn about passive voice verbs, and learn how to discuss unmet expectations.
Week 8: We will use adjectives to discuss changing conditions, and learn to discuss the "impossibility" of events.
Week 9: We will study the usage of "まま" to describe the way things are, and learn new ways of saying "only".
Week 10: We will begin discussing the differences between し, から, and ので, and learn how to say "try to..."
Week 11: We will continue our study of し, から, and ので, and we will discuss how to talk about something "done in advance."
Week 12: We will learn how to use various "intensifiers", and we will learn how to use "accidental/unintentional" verbs!
