Class Experience

What is Hand-Lettering? Hand-lettering is the art of drawing a letter or word as opposed to writing it or typing it. Hand-lettering brings together words and art, so it is the perfect class for an aspiring designer, journaler, writer, or illustrator.

In this class we will choose one word to focus on per session. The word might be a noun, an inspirational word or short phrase, or an emotion. After we choose the word, we will draw that word as a design, adding pictures or elements such as shape or line.

Hand-lettering styles range from formal to free-form and imaginative. Each week we will explore a style of hand-lettering that complements the word. We will learn how to place the word within a shape, or to place each letter within a shape. Then we will add decorative elements such as curvy lines, zig zag lines, shapes or pictures. We will also experiment with line weight and variety. Students will also be instructed on how to hold pencil/pen in order to achieve clarity in forming the shapes and lines of letters.

Here is the schedule for upcoming sessions. The description includes word and art skill:
1) Week 1: Explore / Box Letters
2) Week 2: Fancy / Curlicue or Flourishes
3) Week 3: Cupcake / Word in a Picture
4) Week 4 Overjoyed / Zig Zag
5) Week 5: Adventure / Moving Letters
6) Week 6: Suspicious / Angle Letters

IAs the instructor, I teach with two cameras: one showing my face and slide presentation/instrution, and the other showing my hand drawing. While I am teaching design and drawing techniques, I also encourage students to explore their own creative ideas. The class is intended to be a fun exploration of hand-lettering, where everyone is welcome.
