Intro to Greek Mythology- And Write Your Own Greek Myth!!!

This is a one time class that is an intro to Greek Mythology. It will help students to understand examples of Greek Mythology, and the literary structure of the stories. Then, students will use their knowledge to write their own Greek Myth!

Informal assessment is addressed by seeing what students know about Greek Mythology by writing their own story.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This class is a one time class about Greek Mythology. First, the teacher will show two sample videos about Greek Myths. Then, students and teacher will have a discussion about what some themes of the Greek Myths, and what they noticed the purpose of the myths were. Next, teacher will guide students in reading a myth of their choice to get a mentor text. Lastly, students will brainstorm ideas for their own myth, and once they finish their graphic organizer, they will start writing. This activity will help students to see the importance of the Greek Myths, and why they were so important to the ancient Greek people.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the purpose and examples of content for Greek Myths. Then, students will use their knowledge to write their own Greek style Myth.

Parental Guidance
Greek Mythology can use some content that can be scary and is mythical or fake. Students will be told that these were the ancient Greeks' myths were just stories, but they were essential to how they lived and how they truly believed the world worked.

We will use Youtube to watch one or two videos on example Greek Myths. These stories serve as mentor stories so that students can understand Greek Mythology and the structure of the stories, as well as the stories' purposes. Students can also skim over multiple text options of Greek Myths for inspiration. Next, students will fill out a graphic organizer to plan out their own Greek Myth, including their hero, god/goddess, villain, supernatural force it explains, setting, and theme. Lastly, students will write their own story, including all necessary parts of a Greek Myth from their graphic organizer.
