Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This hands-on mobile app development course introduces learners to real-world coding and design through Thunkable, a beginner-friendly, drag-and-drop platform used by professionals to build mobile applications for iOS and Android.
Each class produces a fully functional app, giving students immediate, tangible results and strong motivation to continue learning.

Class Experience

Learners will work step-by-step with the instructor to design, code, and test their own mobile apps. Every session begins with a short concept demo, followed by guided creation time where students build and customize their apps. The class is project-based, interactive, and encourages creativity through color, layout, and function customization.

Parent Note:
Thunkable requires an email address to sign up. Parents may choose the sign-up method that best suits their family. A laptop or desktop computer is strongly recommended for building apps (not tablets).

Weekly Projects

Week 1 – Talking Device App: “My Device Can Speak!”
Learn how mobile apps work across platforms. Create a text-to-speech app that tells jokes, shares facts, or reads the time aloud.
Skills: UI design, event triggers, text-to-speech components.

Week 2 – Musical Xylophone App
Design a colorful xylophone with sound effects that respond to button clicks.
Skills: Button events, audio integration, interface layout.

Week 3 – BMI Calculator App
Build a health tool that calculates BMI using user-input data and math logic.
Skills: Variables, user inputs, data output, conditional logic.

Week 4 – Multi-Page Quiz Game App
Create a true-or-false quiz with randomized questions and score tracking.
Skills: Randomization, multiple screens, scoring systems.

Week 5 – Live Data Tracker: COVID Stats App
Fetch real-time data from online APIs and display it inside the app.
Skills: API integration, live data, dynamic content updates.

Week 6 – Digital Planner & To-Do List App
Design a productivity app with a calendar, date/time functions, and local data storage.
Skills: Data persistence, date/time pickers, multi-screen app flow.

Learning Goals

Design, code, test, and debug six real-world mobile applications.
Use variables, events, and logic to create interactive functionality.

Syllabus

6 Lessons
over 6 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Talking Device App – “My Device Can Speak!
Objective: Learn how apps work across iOS and Android, and create a text-to-speech app that interacts with the user.

Description:
Students are introduced to mobile app design and development. They’ll learn the basic structure of an app, including screens, components, and event triggers. By the end of the class, learners will create a “Talking Device” app that can tell jokes, announce the time, or read out fun facts using text-to-speech functionality.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Musical Xylophone App
Objective: Design a colorful interactive xylophone that plays real sounds when tapped.

Description:
Learners explore event-based programming by creating a virtual xylophone. They’ll work with color design, layout arrangement, and audio integration to make each button produce a unique musical note.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
BMI Calculator App
Objective: Introduce logic, math operations, and user inputs through a real-world health app.

Description:
Students will learn how to accept user input, process data using variables and mathematical formulas, and display calculated results. They’ll build a BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator that determines health ranges based on input weight and height.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Multi-Page Quiz Game App
Objective: Learn multi-screen navigation and random question logic through game creation.

Description:
Students will design and program a true-or-false quiz game. They’ll use multiple screens, randomize questions, and add a scoring system to track user performance.
