Class Experience

Has your learner ever been curious about sign language? Are they a tactile, "hands on" learner? If so, this class will be a perfect introduction to American Sign Language! In this class, learners will learn the ASL Alphabet through the technique of finger spelling. They will learn how to sign each letter in the ASL alphabet, through live instruction, songs, and games. At the end, they will learn how to sign their own name in ASL. No prior experience is needed, this is an introductory one-time class.

American Sign Language is the third most studied language in the world, and learning it has so many cognitive and practical benefits. ASL has been proven to improve speech development, reading, memory, and tactile skills in children who study it. This class serves as an introduction to the rich language that is ASL, as well as fun activity to challenge your learners brain and hands!

Structure:

1. Introduction to ASL and finger spelling (5 minutes)
2. Live finger spelling instruction- how to sign the alphabet (25 minutes)
3. Song - Practicing what we learned (5 minutes)
4. Game - Animal ABC's finger spelling game (10 minutes)
5. Spell your name- I will help each student finger spell each letter of their name and practice it with them (15 minutes)

As this is a completely live class, learners get lots of interaction and are encouraged to ask questions and participate in the songs and games. I always tell my students there is no such thing as a silly question!

The class will also receive a worksheet on the class page, with all of the finger shapes, that they can later refer to for practice.
Learning Goals
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate correct use of fingerspelling and letter shapes in ASL.

I studied ASL for three years in high school, receiving a 3.90 grade average in the class and completing ASL Level 3. I now use ASL regularly in my work with children with developmental and learning disabilities in elementary schools. This is an introductory one-time class, where I will be introducing the basic principles and hand-shapes of the ASL alphabet.
