In this 12 week course, students will continue to polish basic techniques as they begin to learn more complex technique and vocabulary and, of course, their next kata.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Kata and Vocab Review
We will review the katas we have learned so far in the belt program as well as all Japanese vocabulary. Going forward, belt tests will include our current class curriculum as well as past curriculum to ensure we are building towards Black Belt. I will introduce our goals for this class, which include a new kata: Pinan Nidan, new vocabulary: kumite (sparring), uke (block), tsuki (punch), jodan/chudan/gedan zuki (high/middle/low punch), new technique: axe kicks, balance kicks, & sparring concepts.
Lesson 2
Hand and Foot Review
We will review all of the hand and foot techniques we have learned so far (all kicks, jabs, jab cross, hook, uppercut, backfist, etc).
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Axe Kicks and Pinan Nidan Section 1
We will learn axe kicks and begin learning Pinan Nidan Section 1. Learn uke and incorporate that language into warmups going forward.
Lesson 4
Pinan Nidan Section 2, Balance Front Kicks, Slips and Shields
Review axe kicks and learn Balance Front kicks. Learn Pinan Nidan Section 2 and practice adding to Section 1. Learn kumite and defense against Jodan technique: slips and shields.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Balance Round Kicks and Leg Checks
We will review Pinan Nidan Sections 1 and 2 and focus on learning Balance Round kicks. Learn sparring defense against Round Kicks: leg checks. Learn tsuki/zuki.
Lesson 6
Pinan Nidan Section 3
We will learn Section 3 of Pinan Nidan and piece all 3 sections together. Review all three new kicks and sparring techniques. Review new vocab.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Balance Kick Transition
Review Sections 1-3 of Pinan Nidan. Learn the transition from Balance Front to Balance Round kicks. Sparring game.
Lesson 8
First Stripe Test
This test will cover: Kata: Sections 1-3 of Pinan Nidan Vocab: kumite, uke, tsuki, zuki Kicks: Axe kicks Balance Front kicks Balance Round kicks Sparring: Slips and Shields Leg checks
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Pinan Nidan Section 4, Balance Side Kicks, Side Steps
We will begin learning sparring defenses against Linear Kicks (Front and Side): Side Steps. We will learn Section 4 of Pinan Nidan and Balance Side kicks.
Lesson 10
Balance Transitions
We will review Sections 1-4 of Pinan Nidan and learn the transition from Balance Round to Balance Side kicks.
 Week 6
Lesson 11
Pinan Nidan Section 5 and Switch Axe Kicks
We will learn Section 5 (Final Section) of Pinan Nidan and learn Switch Axe kicks. Review Balance Side kicks and transitions.
Lesson 12
Full Kata and Full Combo, Shields
We will piece together the full kata and introduce the full Balance Kicking combo (Balance Front>Balance Round>Balance Side). We will learn sparring defenses against Chudan and Gedan level attacks: Outside In Center Blocks and Body Shields.

White Belt Review
Review Fukyugata Ichi and all Front kicks. Review Slips and Skull Shields.
Lesson 18
Yellow Belt Review
Review Fukyugata Ni and all Round kicks. Review Leg Checks.
 Week 10
Lesson 19
Orange Belt Review
Review Pinan Shodan and all Side kicks. Review Side Steps.
Lesson 20
Green Belt Review
Review Pinan Nidan and all new kicks. Review Body Shields.
 Week 11
Lesson 21
Mock Tests
We will have a final practice day reviewing our entire checklist and ensuring everyone is prepared for the final tests.
Lesson 22
Third Stripe Test
This test will cover everything we have learned in this class only: Pinan Nidan, vocab (kumite, uke, tsuki, jodan/chudan/gedan zuki), all axe kicks, balance kicks, and sparring techniques.
 Week 12
Lesson 23
Blue Belt Test
This test will cover every kata we have learned so far in the belt program (Fukyugata Ichi, Fukyugata Ni, Pinan Shodan, Pinan Nidan) as well as all Japanese vocabulary and overall techniques. I will provide a comprehensive vocab sheet during class. Starting to retain the curriculum as a whole is a huge step in their growth toward black belt!
Lesson 24
Graduation
Belts and awards will be presented. Congratulations!
Students will learn a new kata: Pinan Nidan, new vocabulary words (kumite, uke, tsuki, zuki), new kicks: axe kicks, balance kicks, and a new kicking combo, as well as sparring techniques. We will also work on adding these techniques to our existing curriculum. By the time your student reaches Purple Belt, they will know four total katas, have a proficient understanding of Japanese vocabulary and intermediate karate technique. 
Homework Offered
I will assign homework as needed. Sometimes it will be assigned to the entire class, other times everyone will be assigned something different based on their specific needs.

Assessments Offered
Learners will be assessed every 4 weeks with stripe tests and one final belt test at the end of the course.

Belt
Students will need to wear their karate uniform and belt, have an open area so they can move around, and a bottle of water nearby! While we will definitely warm up and stretch in class, students are encouraged to stretch beforehand as well.
