ようこそみなさん! Welcome, everyone to Intermediate Japanese II! In this course, we will begin to advance further into speaking, reading, and writing as we dive into more kanji, grammar, and vocabulary! Like the previous course (Into to Intermediate Japanese), this course is designed to teach students some of the material that would be covered up through the Japanese Language Proficiency Test's second level, the JLPT-N4. The assumption is that students in this class already know most of the grammar that would be covered up through the N5 test and some basic intermediate concepts. Students will learn new grammar concepts in class, where we will practice speaking and listening to one another with the grammar being studied that week. Between classes, students will be enrolled in my flashcard course where they will be asked to study fifteen minutes a day to keep up with the material we are learning in class. Besides the flashcard homework, this class has occasional reading, listening, and writing assignments. These additional assignments will generally take no longer than half an hour for the whole week. Students who have not taken Beginner's Japanese 1, 2, or Intro to Intermediate Japanese are free to enroll in this course, but they will be expected to know most of the information taught in that class. At the bottom of this description, you will find a list of the kanji covered in the first two classes. The curriculum below focuses on verb grammar, but we will be learning nouns, particles, and other bits of grammar throughout the class :) Week 1: We will learn how to say, "What if you..." and begin learning how to say "in order to..." Week 2: We will begin to study giving/receiving and doing actions for other people; additionally, we will continue studying "in order to..." Week 3: We will continue studying giving/receiving and doing actions for other people; additionally we will discuss "Became able to/became one who does..." Week 4: We will finish our study of giving/receiving and doing actions for other people; we will also spend extended time with explanatory-「の」 Week 5: We will study how to apologize, how to express regret, and learn plain volitional form. Week 6: We will learn, "do you want me to...?" and a new way to say, "I think I'll.../I intend to..." Week 7: We will learn the conjunction "despite" and also learn different ways to say "maybe/perhaps." Week 8: We will compare various adversative conjunction (but, however, despite, etc.) and learn "whether or not..." Week 9: We will study the ending particle かな, and how to talk about the wants and desires of others. Week 10: We will describe what things look at and learn a new conditional phrase (なら). Week 11: We will talk about what we should have done, and learn about causative verbs! Week 12: We will learn about passive-causative form, and review/compare our various conditional phrases! Here is the list of Kanji the kanji covered in Beginner's Japanese 1, 2, and Intro to Intermediate! Those who have previously studied kanji via WaniKani will find these kanji equivalent to about WaniKani level 6 (most of the kanji through level six have been covered, though not all, almost no kanji beyond level six have been covered).
Learning Goals
Students will receive a further introduction to intermediate Japanese grammar and writing concepts. The student will spend more time working with, reading, and listening to native Japanese content as they develop their abilities. Their ability to read Japanese sentences will improve as they learn more about grammar, syntax, and kanji.
