Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
In this one-time introductory class, learners will learn and identify the 4 main sounds of the letter "a". They will use emojis to help them to discover and retain the 4 sounds. Through their discovery, they will learn what "a" looks like, sounds like, feels like, and tastes like, though not necessarily in this order.

We will begin with an opener of items we like that begin with the same letter as our name. The learners will then see each emoji presented and discuss the sound that the emoji may represent, followed by acting out these emotions. Participation in movement and sound is greatly encouraged as the learners get excited about learning the sounds.

They will be shown how to combine each sound with a consonant (chunking), be introduced to proper techniques for writing a lowercase "a", and begin to sound out words to a story with the first sound if time permits.

My teaching style is very hands-on and multi-sensory. I find that this approach has the greatest chance of finding a learning style that works for each learner while exposing them to other styles. Typically, participants will be able to interact with each other (and me) for the bulk of the class via the multiple senses and activities.

Being slightly familiar with beginning consonant sounds is helpful, but not necessary, as even basic sounds are often taught incorrectly outside of class (e.g. - /buh/ is not correct for the letter "b" and does not help with reading fluency). Each sound they need for the intro lesson will be provided at the proper time.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the 4 main sounds of "a" in American English. They will be able to repeat all 4 sounds. They will be introduced to a story with the 1st sound.

Hi! I'm Miss Grace, but you may call me Miss G.

I teach full-curriculum elementary classes, reading & language arts classes, and math classes with incredible results.

I hold credentials in two states with endorsements for ECE (PK-3), Elementary Ed (1-8), and Multiple Subjects (PK-12). Teachers and parents call me the "Reading Specialist" because my students accelerate learning with my self-authored curriculum, workbooks, and original stories. My math program also accelerates learning!

My experience includes teaching in private and public schools, a homeschool environment, and more. There is no "one-size-fits-all" when it comes to education. I incorporate multi-sensory learning techniques to enable learners to absorb and retain the best way for them. I may sometimes incorporate techniques such as Orton-Gillingham, SSRW, Spalding, Saxon, Assured Readiness for Learning (ARL), McCracken, Montessori, and more. But, I find that my unique way of multi-sensory teaching yields the best results. My curriculum is constantly evolving to fit the needs of the learners.

Something fun and personal about me is that I taught myself to play piano when I was eleven. I also speak Japanese and lived in Japan for 16 months, and then another three the following summer when I stayed with a family and taught ESL to children.

Here are some of the results I've seen most recently:

*Student A:
Grade 1 - Now reads at grade level 4, ready for 3rd-grade Math!

*Student B:
Grade 1 - Beginning reading level: Pre-K/K, Ending: Grade 2
Grade 2 - Ending grade level: 5/6, ready for Grade 4 math!

*Student C:
Grade 1 - Beginning reading level: Pre-K, Ending level: 2nd-grade
Grade 2 - Now reads at 7th-grade level!

*Student D:
Age 9 - Beginning reading level: Pre-K, no interest
After 2 mo. Summer program: 2nd-grade+ reading level and loves to read!

*Student E:
Grade 2 (age 8) - Beginning Reading Level: Pre-K
After 4x/week classes: Grade 5 level, reads chapter books!
