Class Experience

This is an ongoing class that will meet 2 times per week. We will spend each session singing, dancing, reading a book or nursery rhyme, and/or participating in a simple activity. The following areas of development will be addressed during each class: social emotional skills, literacy, and communication. When we do an activity, I will also be incorporating some pre-math, science, and/or social studies in a fun, playful way.

I am an enthusiastic teacher! I keep circle time going at a steady pace so learners do not get bored but I also provide "wait time" for those who need a little extra time in answering questions and participating. I will also modify my lessons and material to help meet every child at their developmental level (using visuals, models, and/or other prompting). The learners will be able to interact by singing, dancing, answering questions, talking to peers, and participating in activities.

The class routine will have a structured schedule for consistency:
1) Greeting/introductory song
2) Greet each child individually
3) Check the weather
4) Learn or practice a calming strategy
5) Read a short book or nursery rhyme
OR
Do an activity (i.e. sorting, matching, mapping, etc.)
6) Sing & dance to a song
7) Goodbye song

Communication and structure will be two big focuses of this circle time.

No experience of background knowledge is needed from week to week.

Learning Goals

Children will learn a variety of social/emotional skills, literacy skills, and ways to effectively communicate with adults and peers. Children will also be exposed to the arts, pre-math, science, and social studies in a fun and interactive way. There will not be any “drilling” of academics in this class.

Below is a breakdown of what we will do the first few weeks of class. New learners can enroll at any point and I will make sure each child (no matter when they join) gets to introduce themselves, learns the routine, and shares their favorites with the class!

Week 1: Get to know each other & the routine
Week 2: What is your favorite toy?
Week 3: What is your favorite song?
Week 4: What is your favorite color?
Week 5: What is your favorite animal?

(These topics are not set in stone and may change based on the children's interests.)
