Class Experience

Each week the class will begin with a warm-up/get comfortable question. We will then have a brief explicit teaching of the math concept to be taught. Then I will introduce and we will play the game. Ideally we will spend the last 15- 20 minutes of class playing the game.

For true mastery it would be best if at home you can play the game throughout the week. Adding the same numbers over and over as you play the game is what will help master the addition facts. Each game takes at the most 10 minutes to play, but provides great practice of the concept taught.

To play the games I will be sharing a link in the classroom to a private room that only our class can access during class. The platform we are using will be playingcards.io

Content focus:
Week 1: Finding the pairs that make ten and playing Go-Fish
Week 2: Finding sums less than 10 and playing a board game
Week 3: Adding 9 to numbers and playing a variation of Bingo
Week 4: Adding 8 to numbers and playing a board game

All print outs will be uploaded in the classroom ahead of time; make sure to check each week!

The first week we will play a variation on Go Fish. We will use a website called playingcards.io to play. A link will be sent via chat to a private room for only our section. This could be challenging at first, but students usually pick up on it very quickly.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I use to teach grades K-2, with lots of kids added in who needed different ways to learn and be successful and I loved (almost) every minute of it! Now I am a full-time homeschooling mom to 3 boys who all learn in very different ways. My classes aim to make students excited about the class topic and allow them to dig deep and represent their learning in unique ways. I love picture books and my boys love Lego's, non-traditional learning, Science, and History. So I try to combine those concepts as much as possible to create an engaging experience for students that will allow what they learn to stick with them.
