We will work through a variety of elements, including creative writing, non-fiction writing, inference, building writing plans, exploring various styles of writing and the most appropriate vocabulary for different styles, looking at synonyms and antonyms, tenses, clauses and so on. Students will improve understanding of and ability to use a variety of styles of writing and grammatical structure and build a wider vocabulary and knowledge of formal and informal 'voice'.
No sensitive material will be used. Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, I've almost 20 years of experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds) and also as a Home Educator. Over those years I have regularly worked with groups of children specifically on English writing skills. I currently work with several students of different ages and stages of learning online on a 1:1 basis.
Homework will only be given if requested specifically. Examples of homework, when set, could be writing tasks such as finding a synonym to replace words in a passage, looking out for and finding examples of certain grammatical features within the student's own leisure reading, writing a short descriptive passage on a given subject (eg, describe your favourite meal/ write two versions of a walk through a forest- making one peaceful and one scary, etc), finding and correcting mistakes in a given piece of writing- and so on.
Notebook and something to write with or device for working on.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Submitted work will receive written feedback.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Classes will be planned to meet aspects that parents would like to work on and all content will be age-appropriate and planned/ prepared by me.
Students will be asked to be aware of certain grammatical features in their own reading material. Content for working on in class and for any homework will be produced by me.
Building confidence and a love of learning with a student centred approach and fun along the way.
