Class Experience
Each week we will read a different classic and memorable children's book. These books are favorites from my childhood and my children's childhoods. I will provide a worksheet for the students to print before class. This will have words from the story and activities to introduce the phonics concepts we will word on. We will practice words from the story and review the phonics skills. Then the students will see the book either as an ebook as I share my screen or I will hold the actual book up to the camera and the page will fill the screen so the kids can see the pictures and words clearly. The students will take turns volunteering to read. We will stop and discuss interesting points about the story. I will reinforce some phonics skills while reading if the students need support. After the story I will have reading activities for the students to practice the skills needed for the story. I will teach with a white board, google documents and digital games. This class works as an on-going class because the instruction is not presented in a progressive order. The phonics skills are what is generally taught in a first-grade reading program and are meant for review, reinforcement and practice. The first five weeks are scheduled as follows: Class 1, April 12 - Ponies, by Anna Ratzesberger. This book is a sweet poem about friendly little ponies who give children pony rides at the park. The pictures are large and colorful and the words give us lots of discussion points about ponies. We will explore rhyming and contractions. Class 2, April 19 - A Monkey Tale, by Hamilton Williamson. In his beautiful jungle home, a curious monkey gets a little too curious! We will explore words with "s" blends and spelling words with the suffix "ed." Class 3, April 26 - Jamberry, by Bruce Degen. This is a beautiful trip through the berry fields! The story is a poem with many creative, made-up compound words. We will explore words that end with these letter combinations : erry, ery, arry, ary Class 4, May 3 - Caps for Sale, by Esphyr Slobodkina. A peddler who sells caps takes a nap under a monkey tree. He wakes up to a puzzling predicament. We will explore hard "c" and soft "c" and using "ch" and "tch" at the end of a word. Class 5, May 10 - The Puddle, by David McPhail. A little boy sails his toy boat in a puddle. A frog comes along. That's when things start getting a little crazy.... We will explore using "le" and "ly" at the end of a word.
Learning Goals
Students will gain practice reading connected text out loud. They will improve in their understanding of at least two phonics skills/rules. They will enjoy talking to the teacher about the story and the reading concepts.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi everyone! I'm very thankful to be added to this wonderful group of amazing teachers and super students! I'm a homeschool mom + reading specialist + ESL teacher. We have 8 kids ages 14-29 so homeschooling has been part of my life for a long time. I found out early on that my favorite thing to teach is reading. It's such an important skill! I use the Barton Reading and Spelling System for most of the reading teaching that I do. More recently I have discovered teaching English online. I thoroughly enjoy teaching children in China to speak our beautiful language. I'm so excited to have found a fantastic ESL program called Off2Class that I can use with kids on Outschool.
I have a Bachelor's degree in sociology and education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. I've been teaching in a variety of settings ever since. This includes homeschool (pre-k through 12th grade), children's programs at church, two private Christian schools, private tutoring business and online ESL (VIPKid).
I love seeing kids smile during class and I understand the importance of student engagement and participation in the learning process. I will provide lots of opportunities for your student to interact with me and the learning materials. Let's have a great time improving reading and English skills!
