Indigenous Studies: The Metis of Canada

In this class students will learn about who the Metis (The "Flower Beadwork People") are in Canada, and about their rich history, culture, food, dress, traditions and more courtesy of the MNBC official curricular educational program.

Homework
1 hour per week. There will be a simple word search quiz to complete after class and a self-evaluation for parents requiring written evidence of their student learning about the content presented in this class.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
There are 7 lessons that will be covered in this Unit:
1) "Who Are the Metis": a lecture and discussion on the genealogical evolution of this Nation of people.
2) "The Buffalo Hunt": a lecture and discussion of how this cultural practice was both a political structure and a means of survival.
3) "Metis Food and Clothing": a lecture and discussion on the food and clothing that distinguishes this group of people from others.
4) "Traditional Metis Sash": a lecture and discussion on the functionality and the symbolic nature of the sash.
5) "Metis Transportation": a lecture and discussion on the unique modes of transportation developed by the Metis for business and survival in the rough terrain of what is now North America and parts of the U.S.A.
6) "Music and Dance": an introduction to the development of the unique musical sound and dance of this culture.
7) "Metis Community Gathering": a lecture and discussion of the social dynamic within the Metis culture.
All topics will be covered by a teacher led Power Point presentation, classroom discussion and a worksheet to fill in as the class progresses.
Learning Goals
Most notably, the students will learn to appreciate the historical connection this culture has with the land, how they evolved into a distinct people.and what separates them from both the European culture and the First Nations People of Canada.
