Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
What is Indigenous Peoples Day and how is it celebrated?

In this class, we will talk about what Indigenous Peoples Day is and why it is celebrated in many places throughout the United States. I will use a PowerPoint presentation to show pictures of Indigenous peoples in the U.S. as well as pictures of Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations. We will talk about what you can do to celebrate and learn more. We will watch a video or two about different celebrations around the country, as well as a music video by Native musicians. We will talk about some of the issues faced by Native peoples today as well as our triumphs and resilience, to understand why Indigenous Peoples Day is important. I will post additional resources in the classroom after class. This class is taught by an Indigenous person.

(This class is for older students. There is also one for younger students if you are outside this age range.)

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The focus of this class is on the holiday Indigenous Peoples Day in the United States. Since it exists as a replacement for Columbus Day, we will briefly talk about why many Natives want to get rid of Columbus Day. I will not go into much detail, but discussion of some of the harm he brought will be kept age appropriate. In the discussion about issues and triumphs for Natives in the US today, we will be discussing things like poverty, suicide, substance abuse, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, etc. The discussion will focus on moving that narrative to positive aspects of our lives like preserving cultures, languages, traditions, and ways of life and how we are present in U.S. culture and society in many ways.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a citizen of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas. I have been teaching about Native peoples, past and present, for many years. My children and I have been hired at museums, schools, historical sites, and libraries over the years to teach students from pre-school to adult ESL, as well as teaching teachers how to accurately teach about us. I love teaching children about Native peoples. Truthful education about us is important and I love to help people of all ages learn accurate information. Indigenous Peoples Day is a holiday my family and I have spent years advocating for in several different cities and we continue to push for a federal holiday.
